Our Secret PlaceIn 1941, when Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met to sign the Atlantic Charter - they met "somewhere in the North Atlantic." While not quite as significant as the beginning of a war that changed the world, something else pretty special happened that very same year in that very same secret place.
It's not where the story of the Alaskan Malamute began, but it did change "our" world. If you have read the autobiography of Robert Zoller, or any book of modern malamute history, then you know the significance of a chance encounter between a man and a dog. The man would forever be known as the father of the modern day malamute, and the dog - well, we'll never quite know. And that encounter - happened at the Argentia Naval Base in Eastern Newfoundland. An encounter that changed the future of our breed. Since the Alaskan Malamute of Canada hosted its first National Specialty Show in 1982, this will be the first time that the event has been held in Newfoundland. |
